UMENDRA PRATAP SINGH

Umendra Pratap Singh is a contemporary Indian artist whose minimalist and abstract paintings explore silence, spirituality, and the passage of time. Drawing inspiration from history, mythology, and nature, his works often feature ancient architecture and lived spaces, connecting cultural heritage with contemporary understanding.

Educated at the Faculty of Visual Arts, Banaras Hindu University, where he earned his BFA in 1996 and MFA in 1998, Singh has developed a practice rooted in discipline and reflection. Working primarily with acrylic and oil on canvas, he employs color-field and non-objective approaches influenced by Zen, Buddhism, and Theosophy. His restrained use of form and color creates meditative compositions that invite viewers into a dialogue with the inner self.

Singh’s themes encompass mythology, philosophy, and heritage, yet his art remains universal—seeking to convey desires for love, peace, simplicity, and kindness. Through minimalism, he represents silence and the gap between eras, bridging past legacies with present societal consciousness.

Based in Lucknow, Singh works independently and has exhibited widely, with shows in India and abroad, including Singapore, Spain, and the United States. His paintings have also been featured at venues such as the India Habitat Centre.

In essence, Singh is a classically trained artist who translates deep philosophical and historical concepts into serene, contemporary abstract art, reflecting India’s cultural richness and universal human experience.
