Vijaya Kumar is a self-taught artist whose ardent love for painting has shaped a lifelong journey of exploration and originality. Since 1969, he has developed a unique technique that distinguishes his work, most notably his trademark mountainscapes, which transport viewers into realms of fantasy and reflection. For him, the act of painting is both personal and shared—a journey undertaken by artist and onlooker together.
Vijaya Kumar’s career began with abstract works, his first exhibition held in Guntur in 1978. Alongside fellow artists, he formed the group later known as the Guntur Kala Pandavas, exhibiting together for nearly two decades until 1997. Over time, his art evolved from abstraction to surrealism, before arriving at the majestic subject of mountains—nature’s most enduring and decorated forms in the absence of humankind.
Beyond his canvases, Vijaya Kumar has contributed significantly to the academic and cultural landscape. He guides doctoral research scholars, conducts demonstrations at art centers, and supports the development of study material for MFA distance education courses affiliated with Karnataka State University. He serves as an honorary jury member at the National Institute of Fashion Technology, Hyderabad, and as visiting faculty at AISFM.
Renowned for his ability to capture the rugged detail and three-dimensional profundity of mountain ranges, his works echo the cosmic grandeur celebrated by poets like W.B. Yeats. In them, viewers encounter both realism and transcendence—an artistic legacy that continues to inspire.
